Do you remember water pitchers and bowls?

Although, I didn't grow up in the era where folks cleaned up by using a water pitcher and bowl sitting nearby, I still love looking at these pieces when ever I am antique hunting.I love how they make a room look. I don't own an official bowl, pitcher, or table that actually served that purpose, so I try to copy that with what I have. {: Maybe you are lucky enough to have Grandma's or your Mother's ?

Many years ago, a dear friend gave this white/cream colored pitcher to me. She remembers her father had made it. It is a wonderfully made piece. I have always cherished it and it has always been a focal point in my kitchen. The large bowl beneath it is from another dear friend who sells Tupperware. I can't believe that this glass bowl is made from the Tupperware company! I have two bowls like this. They are quite heavy and wonderful for fruit or a large dish of food. They work wonderful for a decorative piece as well.
Sometimes, this pitcher just sits empty, but it looks so good that way, but
I usually always have fresh flowers in it, if I have them handy. It cheers up the whole kitchen. Sweetie came home from work with this beautiful bouquet!
This dark little pitcher, I have had for many years, also given to me by a dear friend. ( I think my friends are pushing me towards the antique shop idea, what do you think? ) {: And here is the other large bowl. This set is sitting on an old vanity in our guest bathroom.

This vanity is one of the first pieces of furniture Sweetie and I bought starting out as newly weds. Now that it is in our guest bathroom, I have it filled with nostalgia pieces, (old perfume bottles, little beaded purses,etc. ) but it also holds extra wash cloths and hand towels as well. The drop down section of the vanity is perfect for the bowl and pitcher. Well, now it's your turn. What do you do with all of your treasures? I would love to hear? A wonderful muffin to wake up to!


Chocolate Chip Muffins
I found this recipe while browsing the net one day. It comes from a bed and breakfast inn, called Inn at the Park Bed & Breakfast in Louisville, Kentucky. Are any of you familiar with this location? I have made and served these muffins to overnight guests for a breakfast muffin. Also to different work crews who have come out to the house to do repairs for the day. Every time I serve them, they quickly disappear and are always commented on how good they are. I personally love them with a can of drained blueberries instead of chocolate chips. However, I always have to make chocolate chip ones for the family. Either way you decide on how you would like them, I hope you enjoy them!
2 cups flour.................1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 tsp. baking powder....1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. salt.................2/3 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter.....2 eggs lightly beaten
1 tsp. vanilla................1 pkg. chocolate chips or 1 can blueberries
1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Preheat oven to 400.F . Line muffin tins with cupcake papers. In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugars, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, stir together milk, eggs, butter, and vanilla until well blended. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients; add milk mixture and stir just until well combined. Stir in chocolate chips or berries. Spoon batter into muffin tins and bake 15-20 minutes. Cool 5 minutes before removing from tins. Enjoy!

A Depression Era Cookbook


I just received this cookbook a few days ago and have been "reading it" . It has been one I have been interested in for many years, and just now acquired it. I read about Vern Berry in a magazine, either Southern Living or Country Living perhaps? ....several years ago (middle 90's). I had searched for her cookbook then, but living in a small town and being a busy mother, I never seemed to finish my quest. The first 55 pages are such a good read,.... a story of her pioneer great -grandparents traveling on a wagon and all the way to her story of being a young housewife in the Depression era. Many of these recipes are very old, such as Poor Man's Cake and Blueberry Buckle, and Sour Cream Cakes, which by the way, she won a trip to New York in 1950 for entering in the Pillsbury Bake-off contest. Her father was a professional baker, and she has gone on to win many prizes and had turned out to be quite a writer. It says that she was born in 1906 and I haven't done my research to see if she is still alive. I haven't finished the book yet, it is filled with down home recipes with ingredients that are commonly in our pantries. For me so far, a really good addition to my collection.

Mexican Cornbread







This recipe was given to me over 20 years ago and I still make it. It is wonderful with a bowl of soup, enchiladas, or to go along with a pot of red beans.This weekend I made it to go along with a pot of Taco Soup. It was a filling delicious meal. And no, there is no flour, no baking powder....... the buttermilk takes care of all that. Just a wonderful hearty cornbread.




1 cup cornmeal...........................1 cup corn
2 eggs, slightly beaten..................1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp salt..................................3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup veg. oil.........................1 small diced onion
1 small can chopped green chilies......1 cup grated cheddar cheese
Preheat oven to 350.F. Place well greased iron skillet into oven while mixing cornbread batter. ( This makes a good outside crust) Mix all ingredients until well blended. Carefully remove hot skillet and pour batter into it. Bake about an hour until center feels done. Enjoy!

A wonderful recipe blog to read/ The Valentine Cookbook


While searching for great recipe blogs to link to this blog for everyone to enjoy, I came upon this wonderful cookbook blog. Kathleen Valentine, who is also an author and has published books, has made a wonderful family cookbook blog where she has put family stories, vintage family photos, such as the one posted above, and wonderful sounding recipes for everyone to enjoy. A great cookie recipe from a great cookbook author




The first time I ever heard of Jane Watson Hopping was when I found one of her cookbooks in the store. What caught my attention was the cover first, and then the title, " The Pioneer Lady's Hearty Winter Cookbook".She is known as The Pioneer Lady. She is my top of the list favorite when it comes to reading the stories in cookbooks. This is the 6th cookbook she has written. It is filled with real stories of winters past along with antique family photos, poems and hymns. After reading through it and then trying the wonderful recipes, I was hooked. I then proceeded to find a way to get her previous cookbooks, which I found were no longer in print. I spent a year of researching and emailing and was able to obtain all of her cookbooks and each one is filled with the wonderful stories and photos. A couple of years ago, I wanted to see if maybe she would be publishing another cookbook, and found, sadly, where she had passed away. She had finished an upcoming book, but it has not yet been published and at the time of her death, she was working on a cookbook covering the recipes from the depression era. If you ever have a chance to find one of her books, take time to read it. They are certainly treasures. The following cookie recipe is from the book I have just mentioned. I have made these cookies on many occasions. They are delicious and get eaten up quickly.


Old-Fashioned Butterscotch Refrigerator Cookies


3 1/2 cups flour................2 cups firmly packed brown sugar


1 tsp baking soda..............3 eggs


1 tsp. cream of tarter........1 tsp. vanilla


1 tsp. salt.......................1 cup finely chopped walnut (optional)


1 cup (2 sticks) butter softened at room temperature


Sift flour with soda, cream of tarter, and salt. In a large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and stir to incorporate. Then stir the flour mixture gradually into the sugar mixture. Fold in nuts. Shape dough into oblong rolls, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and place in refrigerator until firm, an hour or more. About 20 minutes before baking, preheat oven to 400.F. When the dough is firm , remove from refrigerator and slice 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Bake until firm to the touch and lightly browned, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from oven and transfer to wire rack to cool. When thoroughly cool, store in airtight container. These are great to freeze in containers.Enjoy!

Betty Crocker Cookbook/ Baking Powder Biscuits


While I was in high school, I was fortunate enough not only to have home economics class, but a wonderful teacher, Mrs. Ellis, who not only taught by the book, but also by letting us cook. She was always giving cookbooks as gifts . When graduation came she gave the most appropriate gift.... a Betty Crocker Cookbook. This book went to college with me, to my first "living in my own apartment time" , where it was hardly used at all. Then along came married bliss and I spent my days pouring over the pages wanting to impress my new husband with a new dish each night.The book now after 25 years, is worn, stained, wrote in, and still enjoyed. What I like about this book the most, is it has basic recipes that are easy to follow and requires the common ingredients usually in the cupboard. One of the recipes I use most, is the Baking Powder Biscuits. It can be used as a basic biscuit mix but can be forgiving enough to let you throw in a few extras to change it up. This has been our main breakfast biscuit, wonderful when the recipe is doubled to make extra large biscuits for ham and biscuit suppers. I also add extra milk and cheddar cheese at times to copy those wonderful biscuits from Red Lobster. A simple biscuit with hearty results.

1/3 cup shortening.................1 3/4 cups all purpose flour

2 1/2 tsp. baking powder.........3/4 tsp. salt

3/4 cup milk........................2 tbs. sugar (optional)

Heat oven to 450.F . Cut shortening into flour, baking powder and salt with pastry blender until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in milk so dough leaves side of bowl and rounds up into a ball. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead lightly . Roll 1/2 inch thick. Cut with floured biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet about 1 inch apart. Bake until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Enjoy!

Zucchinni Bread




A few years ago, I received this cookbook as a birthday gift from a sweet friend. Titled Kitchen Keepsakes.. recipes for home cookin', by Bonnie Welch & Deanna White. I just love the cover with the chickens and eggs of course! It is filled with wonderful recipes. One I have tried and love is Zucchini Bread. It makes 2 loaves and tastes absolutely delicious. I am looking forward to raising zucchini this year and will certainly be baking a lot of this to pass around.


NOTE: I did not add coconut or chocolate chips, and I added a whole cup of pecans


3 eggs, well beaten................ 2 cups sugar

1 cup oil................................ 2 cups shredded zucchini

3 cups flour ...........................1/2 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt............................. 1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. cinnamon..................... 2 tsp. vanilla

1 /2 cup chopped nuts............. 1 cup coconut (optional)

1 cup chocolate chips (optional)


Beat eggs until light and fluffy. Add sugar, vanilla, and oil. Blend well. Stir in zucchini. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, soda and cinnamon. Blend with egg mixture. Fold in nuts, coconut, and chocolate chips if desired. Turn into two greased and floured 9x5 loaf pans. Bake at 350.F for 60 to 65 minutes. Enjoy!

Hi everyone, when it comes to taking care of my family, cooking consumes a major part of my time. I have loved cookbooks and family recipes as way back as I can remember. I have collected old and new, and I have a passion for clipped recipes out of magazines and newspapers. As you can see from the photo, I clip them out and paste them into large spiral notebooks. If I have made that particular recipe, I will write a note on it, stating how it turned out. Also one photo is of just some of my cookbook collection. One year, I asked all of our family and friends to send me a recipe with a story about it. After I had received them, a gracious friend helped me type them all up and print the pages. I then placed them in homemade covers and created a family and friends cookbook for all who contributed. I did not ask for money and I did not sell any of them. This was a gift from my heart to all to have to pass down someday to future generations. I got such wonderful feedback from everyone, plus the book had some of the best recipes in it. I am now in the process of writing a cookbook of the meals that my family loves best. Once again, not for profit, but for one day, each of my children to have their own copy... for their favorite dishes.... for the memories. In creating this blog, I will share cookbooks that I have discovered, recipes I have made from these sources and odds and ends of cooking treasures from vintage cupboards.I would love to hear what your favorite cookbook or recipe, or family dining memory is.
